SUCCESSFUL Holmfirth Tennis Club have become night owls!

Over 70 years since their formation, the club off New Mill Road are now playing under new floodlights.

It’s almost 30 years since Holmfirth joined the Huddersfield and District Tennis League and they have two senior mens and ladies sides plus three junior teams in competitive action.

The ladies first team play in Division 1 and have finished second for the last two years, and the club are hoping to make further progress under the guidance of permanent coach, South African Gillian Kilner, who is hosting lessons for players of all ages.

The original club was formed in 1933 as the Girls Friendly Society. It was re-formed in the early 1970s by a group of Parish Church members who thought it would be good to play tennis and allow their children to learn the game.

The club moved to their present location in 1993 when they received assistance and land from the Midlothian Garage in order to give more space, and three courts were built.

The courts were resurfaced in Spring last year and now floodlighting has been installed to all three courts which will give players significantly more court time this season.

New members are welcome and those interested can e-mail Jeff Littlewood on jeff.littlewood1@btinternet.com. Kilner can be contacted on 07780 828819.
