HOLLY HORSFALL and Kim Atkinson are both targeting double success at the Sellers International tennis tournament.

Thongsbridge duo Horsfall and Atkinson, both playing well at the Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club event, are through to the semi-finals of the Ladies singles – and they could meet in the final.

Horsfall is also through to the quarter-finals of the 14 and Under Girls – she is No1 seed – after beating Melissa Maddock 6-1 6-0, while Atkinson is into the semi-finals of the 18s Girls after finishing best runner-up from the round robins.

The Morton sisters, Emily and Katie, from the Huddersfield club, are also through to the last eight in the 14s Girls.

Emily beat Emily Sim (Durham) 5-7 6-2 10-7 and Laura Banks (Lancs) 6-3 6-5 to book her place, while Katie beat Chante Marlow (Durham) 6-1 6-4 and Katie Merrick (Cheshire) 7-5 6-2.

The No2 seed in that section, Lydia Burrows, is out having lost to Louie McClelland from North Scotland 1-6 6-4 10-5.

In the Ladies quarter-finals, Horsfall beat Amy Gatford (Ripon) 6-1 6-2 to reach the semis, while Atkinson defeated Eleanor Bradshaw 6-2 6-0.

Horsfall will meet Alice Copland (Thongsbridge), who beat Iona Amos (Durham) 6-2 1-0 (ret), while Atkinson will play Yorkshire’s Sam Wood, who won a Roses battle against Beth Coton 7-5 7-5.

The 14s Boys final will feature Ross Watson (Lancs) against Josh Webster (Cheshire), while in the 18s Boys, No4 seed Ben Crichton (Lancs) knocked out No1 seed Sean Evans 4-6 6-3 11-9 to reach the final.

He will meetNo2 seed Alec Foot (Lancs) who went through 6-2 6-3.

In the Men’s singles, No1 seed Mike Tolman (Huddersfield) meets Artjoms Fjodorovs in the semi-finals, while in the other half of the draw No2 seed Phil Whalley faces Joseph Babington-Allen after defeating Josh Thompson 6-4 6-4 in a highly-entertaining quarter-final.

Meanwhile, Elland-based Huddersfield member Euan Wilson-Baig, 12, is playing for Yorkshire today before flying out to Spain tomorrow to take up his place at the Barcelona Tennis Academy in Sitges.

Laura Robson reached her first career quarter-final with an impressive 6-3 7-5 win over second seed and world No24 Roberta Vinci at the Italia Open in Palermo.

The 18-year-old got off to a stunning start against her Italian opponent, breaking twice as she stormed into a 4-0 first set lead, before holding her nerve in the second set to win 6-3 7-5.

Her win is a major breakthrough for Robson, who pushed former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone to the limit during Wimbledon, and who now plays Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro in the last eight with a glorious chance to meet the semi-finals.
