Tim Dyson repeated last year’s trophy haul at the Huddersfield Table Tennis Closed Championships held.

Dyson reached the final in each of the four outstanding competitions at Almondbury Sports Centre.

He overcame the first hurdle by winning the Handicap Singles.

Dyson held a two point lead going into the final set and managed to maintain his lead over Nick Ryder claiming the title by a narrow three point margin.

He then faced Darren Lindley in the Over 40s singles final and Dyson won the first two sets 11-4 11-4 with Lindley taking the third 12-10.

Dyson retained his trophy with a 11-6 fourth set win – a title he has held for the previous seven years.

Next up was the Men’s Doubles final and Dyson and regular doubles partner Russell Senior managed to edge the first set 18-16.

Their Deighton Leisure Centre opponents Tomasz Pietrzyk and Damian Galka made it difficult for the holders and won the next two sets 11-9 11-7.

Dyson and Senior were not willing to relinquish their hold on a trophy they have held for the last five years and rallied to take the final two sets 11-8 11-8.

The Men’s Singles had progressed with form, as the top four seeded players contested the semi-finals.

No1 seed Dyson accounted for No4 seed Pietrzyk in straight sets, while Lindley, seeded two, needed a fifth set 11-9 win to reach the final beating his Woodfield Park team mate and No3 seed Ryder.

Having successfully defended three titles it was now time for Dyson to try and claim the prize.

Dyson and Lindley have dominated the Men’s Singles final over the past years with the score 12 wins to Lindley and 11 to Dyson.

In a thrilling match Lindley gained some hope by claiming the third set, but Dyson gained a comfortable victory winning 11-3 11-5 6-11 11-2.

Dyson said: “Before the game I felt like retiring, but after that win I feel good for another 20 years.”

In the mixed ability doubles Golcar Lib youngsters Oliver Read and Scott Singleton were paired with Singles semi-finalists Lindley and Pietrzyk, respectively.

The Golcar players were not overawed by their playing partners pedigree and contributed to an excellent final.

Lindley gave every encouragement to his partner but they just missed out on the title losing 12-10 in the final set to Pietrzyk and Singleton.

Jonathan Heslop, ranked highly at National Cadet level, gained some consolation for a narrow defeat by Pietrzyk in the men’s singles quarter-finals by winning the Band 1 singles and Under 18s singles finals.

In the Band 1 final he beat Keith Skarz in three sets and needed five sets to beat his Deighton teammate Cameron Sandhu in the junior event.

Sandhu has improved considerably over the last 12 months and it would be no surprise to see the two juniors challenging for the open age events in next year’s championships.

Chris Williams won the Band 2 singles, beating Ross Lander in four sets.

In the Band 3 singles David Singleton could not match his son’s doubles success, losing by three sets to David Atherton.

Geoff Dunne repeated last year’s win in the Over 60’s final, beating Bob Sanderson 8-11 11-3 11-5 11-8

Thanks goes to the few players and officials who gave up their time to set up and clear up the venue before and after the championships.

Kingsley and Kath Smith can take pride in their hard work behind the scenes in planning for the event with seeding, handicapping and preparation of match schedules, to make this year’s Closed Championships such a success.
