SPORTING fixtures in Huddersfield and district this weekend have already taken a big hit.

Football and rugby matches scheduled to be played on Council-managed and school pitches in Kirklees have been called off due to the snow.

Saturday’s District League and Works League programmes have been completely scrapped, as have Sunday’s fixtures in the RCD Junior League and the Huddersfield Sunday League, although Heywood Irish are still hopeful their West Riding FA Sunday Cup fifth round tie away to Thornhill Lees might be able to beat the freeze.

Heywoods, of course, are already facing a big backlog of fixtures because of their commitments in the Carlsberg FA Sunday Cup.

Other League’s are still to announce decisions on whether any matches will be played , but the forecast for the next 24 hours is far from encouraging.

A council spokesperson said: “Due to the heavy snow in the last few days, the pitches (council-managed and schools) are already in an unplayable icy condition.

“With the weather forecast for the rest of the week showing no improvement, the council has taken the decision to cancel all matches this weekend.

“Grounds maintenance staff will be making extra effort to prepare the pitches for next weekend’s fixtures.

“The Council also stresses the importance of inspecting the safety of ground conditions prior to playing any games.”
