THONGSBRIDGE ladies B team made an excellent start to the Huddersfield Tennis League Division I season at the expense of promoted Huddersfield B.
The Miry Lane-based club won 10-5 against last season’s Division II champions, who put up a good fight.
Thongsbridge’s first pairing of Denise Skelton and Kim Stothard beat Wendy and Bev Sutcliffe 6-3, 6-1, Chris Noble and Bron Sanders beat Jane Ali and Eva Lambert 7-5, 6-0 and Andree Jennison and Mo Glynn halved 7-6, 3-6 against Kate Holdsworth and Chris Baldwin.
In the second series of games Noble and Sanders won 6-3, 6-4 and Jennison and Glynn 6-4, 6-2 for Thongsbridge, who finished mid-table last season.
Holdsworth and Baldwin then produced an excellent display for Huddersfield to beat Skelton and Stothard 6-2, 6-4.
Even so, with Thongsbridge carving out a 9-3 lead, they required just one set for victory.
Huddersfield hit back however.
Holdsworth and Baldwin continued their good form with a 6-3 victory and the Sutcliffes won their first set 6-4 to reduce the deficit to 9-5.
But Skelton and Stothard clinched the match for Thongsbridge by coming back from 5-2 down to win the set 7-5 and so cement the match result.
