MORE than 100 young riders from across the country enjoyed brilliant racing conditions in the British School Cycling Association Cyclo-cross championships at Greetland on Sunday.

When organisers pencilled in the late-season date for the youngsters there were some fears it might be a tale of mud and tears for the young riders – instead they enjoyed the weekend’s sangria sunshine.

Huddersfield area riders were in the thick of the action – the pick of the bunch being Mirfield rider Rebecca Womersley who was fastest of the girls in the under 16s event.

The under eights’ race was won by Soloman Kerfoot-Robson of Lyndon Primary and Rhos on Sea CC, from Luke Williams of St Mary’s School and Pedalsport (Halifax).

Of the locals Mason Hollyman from Emley First School and East Bradford CC was fourth, Toby Edwards, of St John’s Church School, Golcar and East Bradford CC, fifth and Tom Whitworth, of Crow Lane J & I, and Huddersfield Road Club, sixth of the 17 riders in this category. All the local contingent were seven years old.

Another local rider, who was forced to watch from the sidelines, was Jake Womersley, of Mirfield, robbed of his chance of glory in the Under 12s having suffered a burst appendix the week before.

Bradford Olympic Racing Team’s Rob Watson won the over 16s, ahead of East Bradford CC rival James Simpson. Keighley’s Paul Young was fastest in the under 16 boys, beating Kettering’s Bradley Burbridge and Leeds rider Nick Barnes (Seacroft Wheelers) won the under 14s boys event from Leeds St Christopher CC rival Luke Simpson.

East Bradford CC’s Billy Harding won the under 12 boys’ category from Arthur Green from Matlock and Kent visitor Gretel Warner was fastest girl.

Hampton’s Anthony Anderson won the under 10 boys’ race.

World and Olympic track rider and former world BMX champion Jamie Staff showed over 70 Huddersfield Star Wheelers and their guests at Huddersfield Rugby Union Club, Lockwood a DVD presentation of himself and the GB track team in action.

He also described some behind the scenes experiences from the Athens Olympics and talked about BMX at the forthcoming Beijing Olympics.

Staff donated a signed shirt to the raffle signed by members of the GB track team including Victoria Pendleton, Ross Edgar and Rob Hayles. This was won by Peter Ralph.
