Woodfield Park A turned out their big guns when they met Deighton Leisure Centre A in the Huddersfield and District Table Tennis League’s top flight.

Deighton’s team of three talented Polish players are regarded as challengers to all opponents with league title ambitions.

Woodfield Park are determined to quickly regain the title and in signing Nick Ryder have made clear their statement of intent.

In the event the home trio of Darren Lindley (3), Nick Ryder (2) and Ian McLean (2) proved far too good, winning 8-2. Deighton’s points came from Tomas Pietrzyk, who was defeated only by Lindley.

The previously unbeaten Damien Galka failed to record a win in what was a disappointing match for Deighton.

The win put Woodfield Park at the top of the table and with a strong squad at their disposal, they may take some shifting.

Many top players also compete in other local leagues, which sometimes compromises their availability for their Huddersfield League teams.

However, in the case of Shaun Ellis his loyalty with Kingsmith A could not be questioned.

He is an ever-present in the side and has chalked up an impressive 18 wins out of 18.

His consistency is already making him a hot favourite to take the Division Merit award.

His latest clean-sweep came at the expense of David Brown A as, supported by two wins each from Steve Hanson and Sebastian Frere, Kingsmith recorded a 7-3 victory.

Wilshaw’s two sides in the top flight met.

Defending champions Ash, without the injured Russell Senior, managed a narrow 6-4 win over Beech, for whom Geoff Ogden made his first appearance of the season.

Neil Crosland was undefeated for the victors and, with Janet Adams dropping a set to Ken Ward, they had to rely on the doubles to get home.

The Management Committee have some concern at this stage of the season that Deighton B are falling behind with their fixtures, having submitted only two results from six weeks completed so far.

Once their secretary Paul Simpson returns from holiday it is to be hoped some explanation is forthcoming from this strong club and that they can catch up to avoid a repeat of backlogs experienced in previous seasons.

In Division Two, Wilshaw Damson sit proudly at the top of the division.

Their latest victims were Woodfield Park B who were dismissed with some ease, 8-2.

Daniel Adams came in for his second appearance of the season and was undefeated, while his colleagues Nathan Spencer and Stefan Arak both fell to Fraser Krishke, while Mike Belk had a rare blank.

For Marsh Conservative B, both Steve Martin and Keith Hague were undefeated in their 8-2 victory over Shelley. Glyn Normanton also scored a maximum in Marsh D’s 7-3 win over Kingsmith E.

In Division Three, Wilshaw Elm finally lost their long unbeaten record stretching back 21 matches when they travelled to Scissett WMC B.

Having spent just one season in Division Two Scissett have a strong trio in Clive Standen, Neil Womersley and the tenacious Sarah Napier.

Standen was undefeated while Womersley (2) and Napier (1) made sure that Elm were well and truly felled .

Steve Cook played well for the visitors, winning twice, while it is a long time since Merit Winner Barry Lockwood had a solitary victory to show for his efforts.

Veterans U3A, who play out of Longwood Mechanics Institute, had a rare 10-0 clean sweep over New North Road Baptist Church B. Andy Parker, Doug Holt and Jim Baxter combined to continue the improvement shown already this season.
