HUDDERSFIELD duo St Joseph’s and Emley Moor are through to the second round of the Pennine Presidents Cup.

Premier Division Joe’s progressed after a dramatic golden-point victory over Keighley Town, while Division I side Moor reached round II for the first time with an excellent 10-6 triumph at top-flight New Earswick All Blacks.

Both wins were obviously well received, with Moor taking far more delight from their success against a team from a higher division.

And they were forced to dig deeper than ever to take the honours, with a magnificent defensive effort the key to victory.

It took them 20 minutes to break the deadlock when prop Jason Southwell finished off a good move involving several of his fellow forwards and Karl Adamski added the conversion.

But their York hosts almost immediately hit back with a fortuitous try to leaves the sides locked at 6-6 at the interval.

The tie remained just as tense in the second period, with Moor finally making the vital breakthrough midway through the half when Adamski dabbed through for Dave Pawson to get the crucial touch.

Moor then defended superbly to hold on and secure a win in which teenage forward Alex Rollins was man-of-the-match and Richard Sharpe, Ben Adamson, Simon Adamski and Daz Southwell all gave excellent support.

It was a far different proposition for Premier Division St Joseph’s, however, who scraped through with a 16-12 triumph at Division I team Keighley Town after extra time.

Joe’s started the contest brightly and opened the scoring with a Joe Flaherty try which was converted by Neil Barrett.

But the home side hit back to make it 6-6 at half-time and then took the lead in the second half with a second converted try to put them on course for a shock win.

Fortunately, Shaun Mitchell was on hand to grab a late try, which Barrett again converted, to take the game into extra time.

Both sides had opportunities to win the game in extra-time, but the scores were still level, forcing the introduction of the golden-point rule and the chance for Mitchell to emerge as the hero of the hour as he raced away for a superb long-range try to seal the win.

Man-of-the-match was scrum-half Jimmy Folan, with other good performances coming from Mitchell, Flaherty and Sam Coyne.
