BEN FEEHAN scored a cracking hat trick as Newsome Panthers made it two wins out of two in Division II.
His scores proved crucial as the Panthers gained a hard-earned 26-20 victory at Stanningley A.
Newsome started brightly and, with the help of solid defence, they capitalised on good field position to score tries through Ben Cuttell and Feehan, Studholme adding a goal for a 10-0 lead.
Stanningley then created massive pressure on the visitors line, but Newsome’s defence held strong before Feehan raced 80 yards to make it 16-0 after another Studholme conversion. Unfortunately, Newsome were twice caught napping before half time as Stanningley crossed for two tries.
Newsome started the second half with a catalogue of errors near their own line and the home side grabbed a try to make it 16-16.
Quickly regrouping, the Newsome side sent Feehan over to complete his hat trick and then plenty of hard work, with the forwards surging up field in great style, was rewarded as brilliant handling on the last tackle enabled David Farrell to cross in the corner, with Feehan converting to put them 26-16 up with 10 minutes to go. Stanningley scored again to reduce the arrears to six but then Newsome’s defence, led by James Wallace with 24 tackles, held firm for the win.
Newsome A beat Cowling with a classy 11-try show.
Highlights were a hat trick each for man-of-the-match Marcus Kenchington and Will Wallace.
The visitors scored first but with Newsome’s team having a fine balance of youth and experience, they ground down the opposition and then controlled the game completely to finish with an impressive 54-10 scoreline.
