A HUDDERSFIELD player is the new captain of the Oxford University Rugby League first XIII.

Ben Calverley already has gained two blues for representing the club and being named captain is just his latest achievement.

In his 2nd year at Oxford, he was the President of the club and last year he was the man-of-the-match in the annual Rugby League Varsity fixture against Cambridge.

But now in his fourth year of his Mathematics course, Calverley (pictured above) is ready to captain the dark blues for the first time.

His rugby career first took off in the Underbank Under 7s before he played Union at Rishworth and Huddersfield.

But he returned to League at Greenhead College under the coaching command of Carl Atherton.

A fervent supporter of the Giants, he is the brother of Helen Calverley, a former England Junior badminton international and son of the Giants Supporters Association chairman Dave.
