A NEW masters-style touch rugby competition is to be launched in Huddersfield for the first time.

All of the town’s amateur rugby league clubs have expressed an interest in fielding a team, meaning a eight-week competition to be staged at Fartown is on the cards.

The competition would takes place between early May and mid-July and is open to everyone over the age of 33 who hasn’t been involved in competitive rugby for 12 months.

The reason for that is it is designed to give former players a path back into keeping fit and staying healthy as part of Kirklees Council’s Change4life campaign.

At the other end of the age scale, Giants and England prop Eorl Crabtree paid a visit to Rowley Lane Infant School this week to lend his support to the rugby4tots programme.

The Huddersfield-based scheme, aimed at children between the ages of three and seven to help them develop the basic skills of rugby league, is proving a great success.

Schools throughout the area are on board, and after the Easter holidays the amount of children taking part is set to hit the 300-mark.
