LEADERS Newsome Panthers made it six wins out of six after destroying Thornhill Trojans A 58-4 in an inspired team display.
The early exchanges proved critical, with both sides working hard in attack and defence.
But solid approach play from the Newsome forwards allowed half-backs Ross Studholme and Phil Joseph to distribute the ball, which enabled Thomas Guinan to cross for an unconverted try after an offload from Alex Chatterton to make it 4-0.
And by half-time Newsome had opened up an 18-0 advantage with excellent handling paving the way for James Wallace to cross for a blistering first-half hat trick, with Ben Feehan adding one of the goals.
Newsome continued to dominate both in attack and defence after the break and it was only a matter of time before the floodgates opened.
The Panthers turned on the style and ran in a further five unanswered scores from Joseph (two), Feehan, Chatterton and Wallace, who grabbed his fourth, while Feehan added three further goals and Studholme landed two to make it 48-0.
Thornhill finally found a way through Newsome’s defence to score a consolation try in the 70th minute and make it 48-4.
But Newsome immediately hit back when Marcus Clement crossed for his first Newsome try, converted by Studholme, before Clement again raced onto a Joseph chip to go 70m and seal an excellent all-round team display to keep the Panthers four points clear at the top.
There was also more success for Newsome’s A team who continued their fantastic start to the season with a 32-14 triumph over Illingworth A in their Division VI top-of-the-table clash.
Newsome took the lead with a well-worked try from Dan Farrand and never looked back, with further scores coming from Martin Robinson, Dominic Newton, Farrand and Nick Corion and a fantastic 60m effort from man-of-the-match Chris Whitworth.
Gareth Carter had a good game at scrum half, with Jamie Taylor and Luke Brewster sharing the goal kicks in the win.
