Underbank coach Richard Knight is already bracing himself for some tough selection choices ahead of his club’s first season in Division II of the National Conference League.

Newly-promoted Rangers get their season under way at home to Leigh East on Saturday, March 14.

Before then, they host Division III side Wibsey Warriors in a trial clash at The Cross seven days earlier.

And Knight knows how important that warm-up fixture will be.

“Numbers have been very good since we returned to pre-season training in December,” said Knight, whose squad will be further boosted by the arrival of Australians Chris Druett, Joel Croker, Kurt Selmes and Mitch Turner from Australian club Goulburn Bulldogs at the start of next month.

“And the quality of the work everyone has been putting in has been high.

“Obviously, at this stage, we’re nowhere near confirming who will be in our 17 for our opening League game against Leigh East.

“But we already know there will be some disappointed people, because the numbers that are already training and staking a genuine claim for selection are well over the 17-player mark.

“Hopefully, the trial game against Wibsey will help make our selection choice a little easier, It’s up to every member of the squad to make sure that won’t be the case.”
