THE majority of amateur fixtures were postponed at the weekend as the cold snap made a brief return.

But of those that did survive, St Joseph’s A will have been the happiest after securing their place in the semi-final of the James Joseph Conlan Memorial Trophy with a 20-0 home triumph over Slaithwaite Saracens A.

Newsome Panthers also benefited from beating the big freeze with a narrow 22-20 Pennine League Division VI success at Westgate Wolves.

But it was a different story for the other Huddersfield teams whose fixtures went ahead.

In Division I, Emley Moor travelled to Ackworth Jaguars for a game played in heavy mud and suffered a 36-22 defeat.

Yet it was only in the second half that the going got tough.

Although Moor conceded two early tries, they led 12-10 at the break thanks to two tries from powerful prop Jason Southwell and two Karl Adamski goals.

The Jaguars were also dominant at the start of the second period and quickly opened up a 22-12 advantage.

Former Giants forward Southwell’s hat-trick try promised to provide Moor with a repeat of the opening 40 minutes.

But on this occasion the home side held their nerve to grab two more decisive tries before Daniel Bedford crossed for an Emley consolation in the closing moments.

Although Moor were well beaten in the end, there were still some highly-promising displays from the likes of new centre Sam Dolby and substitutes Adam Dodson and Tommy Clegg.

In the other Pennine League games that went ahead, Moldgreen were beaten 42-0 at Brighouse Rangers in Division II, while Division VI side Emley A lost 44-14 at home to Wyke and Underbank A suffered a 29-6 home Division VII defeat at the hands of Whitworth Spartans.
