Newsome Panthers were invited to provide players for the guard of honour at the Challenge Cup game between Huddersfield Giants against St Helens at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Around 30 players represented teams from Under 8 to Under 14, and all the players enjoyed watching both sets of Super League stars run out and had plenty of photo opportunities with the Challenge Cup.

Panthers Under 12 side enjoyed a 22-10 cup win over Stanley Rangers.

Panthers took the lead when Lewis Murphy, the opposition’s choice for man of the match, gave them the lead – Logan converting.

The next try was scored by Panthers man of the match, James Johnson.

The touchline conversion missed and Stanley hit back with a try only for Johnson to crash over from close range to put Newsome 16-6 up at the interval.

The second-half deadlock was broken when Panthers went over from dummy half to score a converted try as Logan again found the target.

Stanley never gave up and the jaded bodies of Newsome eventually let them in for a consolation score, but Newsome enjoyed the victory and await their next opponents in the cup.

The Panthers Under 13 side had a tough trip to Halifax and were beaten 34-22 by Ovenden.

Having gone through to the Yorkshire Junior Challenge Cup quarter-finals, Newsome were given a cross-divisional friendly game against Ovenden, and the Panthers rested six players who were carrying knocks.

It took only four minutes for captain Joe Hughes to score under the posts and he converted his own try. Ovenden pulled level but Wesley McGuire restored Newsome’s lead with Hughes converting.

The hosts started the second half with three unanswered tries and the Newsome backs had to put a lot of effort in defence with Henry Barton leading the tackling count.

Travis Corion was busy in attack and defence and showed some great pace to go over for Newsome’s third converted try.

Ovenden replied with one of their own, but a strong run by Aaron Reid allowed him to crash over for Panthers’ final try of the game, but Ovenden had the last word and the game finished 34-22.

Hughes was Opposition MoM, Ben Holmes was awarded top tackler and Barton was awarded parents’ player and coach’s MoM.

Newsome’s Under 14 side were beaten in the county cup by Stanley Rangers 15–0. In an error-strewn game the home team were 4-0 ahead at the break and Panthers situation did not improve – Newsome’s MoM went to Kahyam Crampton for his defensive work.

Panthers Under 8 B team visited local rivals Lindley Swifts and the home side had the better of the first half, crossing for five unanswered scores.

The second half was a more even affair as Lindley opened the half with a try but the Panthers replied with a try from Marley Myers.

A further score for Lindley was matched by the Panthers with Demir Acarer scoring.

Lindley went over for two more tries before an offload from Harvey Days produced the try of the match for Acarer.

Strong running from Panthers William Eyre, Alex Kirk and Eoin Morris created space for Archie Duncan to crash over for a score and solid defence from Max Fleary, Jay Crosby and Niamh Ennis kept the second-half score close.

Lindley crossed for a further two tries before Panthers Acarer completed a hat trick of tries.

Panthers man of the match was Jay Crosby with top tackler Acarer.

Newsome’s Under 9 side travelled to Moldgreen and put in their best team performance of the season so far.

Ryan Kirrane-Perrin led the way, with Connor Emerson and Louie Creaser working well together and Ethan Buckley and Jayden Myers doing the same on the other flank.

Dylan Sykes was driving Newsome forward with Malachi McKenzie putting the pressure on Moldgreen to play out from their own line.

Buckley opened the scoring for Newsome for the only try of the first half, and after the break Newsome added to their score with Creaser offloading for Buckley to drive through for his second.

The third was not far behind with Moldgreen giving Creaser space to race through.

Luckas Hussain-King grabbed a try and Kirrane-Perrin added a deserved try to finish the scoring.

Man of the match went to the whole Newsome team, parents’ man of match to Dylan Sykes, Opposition man of match and top tackler to Kirrane-Perrin, most improved was Buckley and magic moment went to Emerson.
