ST JOSEPH'S second string earned the local bragging rights with a 34-22 triumph over Slaithwaite Saracens A in Division IV.

It proved to be a typically-tough derby clash, with St Joseph's hitting back after conceding the opening try to lead 18-6 at half-time, thanks to two tries from Craig Lee on debut, one each from Ben Fox and Mark Wells and a Gareth Carter goal.

The Saracens again did the early running at the start of the second half before Lee completed his hat trick to put the home side back in control.

Further tries from player-coach Joe Kelly and Jason Oldfield, who also added two goals, sealed the victory in which forwards Wells, Mike Silver and Craig Hewitson all impressed.

The Saracens battled throughout and were rewarded for their efforts with tries from Dave Fryer (2), 16-year-old captain Graham Fryer, 18-year-old Chris Todhunter and Justin Brown.

Richard Gutteridge added one goal and also had a solid all-round game, as did man-of-the-match Lee Haigh and Lee Rathmell.
