EMLEY MOOR opened their Pennine League Second Division season with a 31-18 triumph at Westgate Redoubt.

In a match switched to Wakefield because the Welfare Ground is being used to stage the final games of the cricket season, Moor recovered from a nervy start to take the contest by storm.

The visitors trailed 12-6 after the opening quarter, with Karl Adamski scoring his side’s opening try of the campaign and John Roebuck adding the conversion.

But by half-time, Moor had opened up a 16-12 advantage and were on their way.

Prop Jason Southwell celebrated his return from Dewsbury Rams by crashing over for an unconverted try and then Taff Barron charged over for Roebuck to goal and give the visitors the lead.

Within minutes of the restart, former Giants Super League squad man Southwell, left, barged over for a second and Dave Pawson slotted over a drop goal to extend their advantage.

And although Westgate hit back with a third converted score of their own, Moor finished the game the stronger with a Darren Southwell try, converted by Roebuck, who also added a penalty.

In an excellent team display, Roebuck was named coach’s man-of-the-match, while new players Danny Byram, James Uttley and Scott Quarmby all showed up well.

It was also another good day for Moldgreen, who made it two wins out of two in Division I with a solid 18-10 triumph at home to Illingworth.
