FORMER Giants prop Jonny Bruce has been appointed the new coach of Lindley Swifts.
He takes over from Kevin Bower, who moved to St Joseph’s at the end of last season after leading Swifts to the Pennine League Second Division title.
Bruce has already embarked on pre-season training with his new side ahead of Lindley’s Division I challenge, which gets under way at Dearne Valley Bulldogs on Saturday, September 10.
The arrival of Bruce has given the club another huge boost, with the Swifts already excited about the prospect of moving to their new base at Birchencliffe, where they will be playing on a new pitch and out of a newly-built clubhouse.
And Bruce, who also had a successful playing stint at Sheffield Eagles, is pictured above shaking hands with captain Sam McCluskey and surrounded by members of the squad ahead of the club’s latest training session.
Although Lindley kick-off their new Pennine League season on September 10, many of their Huddersfield rivals will have already embarked on their new campaigns.
That’s because the bulk of the opening-round fixtures take place the week before (September 3), although not the town’s Premier Division duo of St Joseph’s and Slaithwaite Saracens.
Those who will be in action on day one are Emley Moor (Championship Division), Newsome Panthers (One), Meltham All Blacks (Five) and Moldgreen (Six).
