TRIBUTES poured in during a testimonial fund for popular Huddersfield Rugby League player Jeff Bawden during a Sportsmen's Evening at the Town Hall.
Fellow player Lionel Cooper, at the outset, described Bawden as "one of the grandest chaps ever to have played with Huddersfield," and the Mayor added his best wishes to a "sportsman and a gentleman."
Bawden said he was overwhelmed at the kind remarks made about him and the grand reception he'd had.
There was a question and answer session during which Huddersfield player-coach Russell Pepperell was asked if he thought there were enough officials on the field at a Rugby League game.
Pepperell was short and to the point and said: "Yes, sometimes there are too many!"
Many questions were asked about Rugby League and Pat Devery spoke about the need for fewer rules, particularly, he thought, those regulating the scrummage.
