KARL HARRISON insists skipper Sean Penkywicz’s forthcoming departure to Leigh Centurions won’t be a distraction ahead of Sunday’s crunch Co-operative Championship play-off clash with Sheffield Eagles.

The experienced former Huddersfield Giants hooker will see out the season with Fax before joining his hometown club – who Harrison’s side could yet meet this time around – on a two-year contract.

Penkywicz’s teammates heard of the versatile 30-year-old’s decision after a training session this week and coach Harrison, whose side must beat Sheffield to keep their grand final dream alive, said: “After a lot of speculation, it’s good this is finally out in the open.

“I think it’s had a bit of an impact on us. Sean’s been in a difficult position because he didn’t want to upset anyone and I don’t think it’s helped his game, but hopefully now the situation has been made clear, we can concentrate on the Sheffield match.”

Former Welsh international Penkywicz, who can also play in the half-backs, came through the ranks at Fax, and after his spell at Huddersfield, returned in 2007.

Whatever the result, Sunday’s game will be Fax’s last at home this season and Harrison added: “Sean’s been a great servant to this club and deserves the chance to say goodbye properly.

“It’s been a dream of his to play for his hometown club, and at the stage he’s at in his career, he had to make that decision now. He feels he has another two seasons left, and when he goes, it will be with our best wishes.”

Harrison will be without prop Tony Tonks on Sunday after the former Huddersfield player broke an arm during last week’s play-off win over Keighley.
