YMCA slipped a place in the National II North table despite picking up a bonus point.
They were beaten 29-22 at Laund Hill by second in the table Wirral.
The home outfit had the better of the first half and led 12-5 for a spell in the opening period.
Centre Adam Ryder led the way as he crossed for two first half touchdowns, but the visitors eventually pulled level at 12-12.
The second half saw Wirral take control scoring three unanswered tries, but YMCA earned themselves some reward with a late converted try securing a precious bonus point in the fight to avoid relegation.

Teenage wing Sam Nunn almost got a touchdown from a kick through by scrum half Gary Morris. Then Morris himself was held up over the line.
Rishworthians had plenty of possession but seemed unable to do much with it until fullback Liam Phillips brought the ball forward from a clearance kick and linked well with stand-off Kelly, who broke through and captain Fraser Swarbrooke on the burst touched down. Kelly converted to make it 14-0 at half-time.
Early in the second half lock Harry Collett took a good ball in the lineout and the pack drove him over with No 8 James Clarke touching down.
Nunn was there shortly after to take the scoring pass from replacement flanker Gerard Rollings, who made good ground after picking up a loose ball.
Rollings was on hand again soon after to pick up another loose ball and needed no assistance to touch down.
Morris took a quick tap penalty and put flanker Nick Faulkner in at the corner for the final score.
