LINDLEY Swifts Under 14 side were stunned by three late tries but felt they had made progress as they were beaten 40-28 at Wibsey.

When Swifts last played Wibsey, the Bradford outfit thrashed Swifts 52-18, so Lindley knew they had their work cut out against the side who top the Yorkshire Junior League’s Division IV table.

They made a stunning start as Jamie Kelly caught the ball from a Wibsey kick and raced the length of the pitch to put the ball under the posts after just 30 seconds of the game.

Alexander added the conversion, but a knock-on allowed Wibsey to cross and level the scores.

Wibsey made the next breakthrough to lead 10-6, but great defensive efforts from Kelly, Rodgers, Ramsden and Brandon Wood kept Wibsey out.

Lindley regained the lead as Damien Wood crossed and Alexander slotted over the goal, but Wibsey finished the half strongly and two tries and a goal gave them a 10-point lead at the interval.

Lindley started the second period strongly with Kelly setting up a try for Damien Wood, and then a Kelly tap and run saw him go over the line again and Alexander added both goals giving the Swifts a two point advantage.

However, Wibsey scored a further three tries and a goal and the Swifts ran out of time to close the gap.

Wibsey handed out three man-of-the-match awards to Kelly, Brandon Wood and Callan Rodgers, while the Swifts man-of-the-match went to Kelly, Swifts tackler to Rodgers and grafter to Brandon Wood.
