Newsome Panthers Under 14s returned to league action with an excellent 28-20 home win against Milford Marlins from Leeds.

In a gale force wind, where long passes were ruled out, both sides handled the conditions extremely well and mistakes were at a minimum.

Newsome, playing up the slope, went ahead after five minutes when winger, Innes Senior, touched down near the flag after a good passing move.

Three minutes later scrum half, William Rogers, went over near the posts for a converted try.

Second rower Luke Hanson added the third, again after a fine break from Senior.

Milford got their first points before Lucas Chappell went over just before the half time whistle to make it 20-4.

The visitors played better up the hill in the second half and scored their second try after five minutes before Senior added his second.

Milford went over for two tries to bring the score back to 24-20 before winger Jack Bland got his first try of the season to make the win secure.

Jasper McGuire added two conversions. Man of the match went to William Rogers, grafter to Jordan James, while Liam Robinson was awarded opposition’s man of the match.

Panthers Under 13s were beaten 40-10 at Hunslet Warriors.

The Panthers travelled to Leeds with 13 players for their first league game after two weeks off.

The lads knew it would be a tough game with no subs against a good team and, right from the outset, the speed of the Hunslet players was something that caused problems.

In the first 15 minutes the hosts notched five tries through some well-executed sets and great line speed.

The Panthers forwards had to work hard to try and reverse the wave of attacks and started to gain ground while the whole team had to work really hard in defence to keep the hosts out.

In the last 10 minutes of the half Newsome started to change the momentum through hard running from forwards Thomas Spiliotis, Scott Moorhouse, Finlay Clarke and Jamie Lynch.

In the 29th minute hooker Bryn Peel started a quick play the ball, scrum half Henry Barton distributed the ball smartly to Billy Haywood who then combined brilliantly with Aaron Reid and Wesley McGuire.

He got to the Hunslet try line for captain Joe Hughes to go over for the first try, making it 26-4 to the Warriors at half time.

The second half started with the Panthers battling hard against wave after wave of Hunslet attacks. Daniel Jessop, Billy Denton and Travis Corion were working overtime in defence and it took 15 minutes before the hosts scored another two tries.

Despite the scoreline, Newsome kept their heads and managed to score their second try through Haywood, converted by Hughes.

In the last two minutes Hunslet scored one more try to finish the game off, but credit to Newsome for never letting their heads drop.

Parents Player and Opposition man of trhe match went to Billy Haywood, Wesley McGuire got Top Tackler and Coaches man of the match went to Thomas Spiliotis.

The Panthers have a week off to prepare for the Challenge Cup quarter-finals against Normanton Knights on April 26.
