NEWSOME Panthers are sitting proudly at the top of the Second Division table after destroying Ovenden A 60-4.
Head coach Phil Joseph’s side dominated from the start, scoring what has to be the fastest try in the club’s history after just 20 seconds.
Straight from the kick-off, Dan Nelmes burst through the Ovenden line and was pulled down 15m short.
And from a quick play-the-ball, prop Lee McCafferty crossed for a try, converted by Ross Studholme.
It set the scene for the rest of the half, with the Panthers 32-0 ahead by the break.
Dave Farrell scored twice and Ben Feehan, Darren Fox and Nelmes grabbed one each, with Studholme and Ben Bridson adding the conversions.
It was a similar story after the break as Feehan quickly added a second.
To Ovenden’s credit, they then crossed for a try of their own, but that just made sure Newsome finished the contest strongly.
James Wallace was the next to strike and Nick Corion quickly followed up as the visitors began to tire.
And in the closing minutes McCafferty and Bridson added further touchdowns, converted by Wallace, to seal an emphatic win.
Leading the work on defence were Simon Burkinshaw, Ste Farrell and McCafferty, with coach Joseph naming Dave Farrell, Steve Morgan and Ste Farrell as his three top performers.
