These are good times up at Underbank Rangers.

The club’s National Conference League side are riding the crest of a wave after securing promotion to Division I three weeks ago.

And Rangers’ winter side have been following their inspirational example.

Having secured Pennine League promotion last season, Underbank have made a solid start to life in Division I and are currently sitting second behind Boothtown Terriers in the League table.

They’ve also enjoyed some early-season success on the knockout front and have just progressed into the third round of the Pennine President’s Cup.

That was achieved as a result of their convincing 24-7 home weekend Cup win over Bradford Victoria Rangers, who are just one place behind Rangers in the First Division table.

Also through to the third round of a Pennine League competition are Newsome Panthers, thanks to an 18-0 result over Halton Moor Storm, while Meltham All Blacks returned to winning ways with a 34-4 Supplementary Cup second-round success at Queensbury B,

Meltham made the best possible start when they scored on their attack as Scott Quarmby put Richard Barber over in the corner.

The All Blacks extended their lead after 30 minutes when scrum-half Dave Farrell danced his way over and just before the break Ryan White took the ball at pace to cash over.

Then right on the stroke of half-time Andy Farrell went over in the corner to give Meltham a 18-0 half time lead.

Playing downhill in the second half, Meltham used their big forwards to roll them downfield and, on the end of one of these sets, Steve Farrell put brother Dave over for his second.

Steve scored the next try, collecting the ball 30m out and then beating two defenders to put the ball down under the posts,

Meltham’s last try was scored by Ben Moorhouse who kicked through a dropped Queensbury pass to touch down at the side of the posts,

The hosts scored in the last minute to make the final score 34-4, with Andy Farrell kicking three goals, with Paul Carmody named the Mozzarellos of Marsden man-of-the-match.

But there were defeats for Huddersfield’s two clubs in Pennine League action.

While Lindley Swifts’ scheduled First Division fixture was postponed, St Joseph’s suffered a narrow 10-8 defeat at Ossett Trinity Tigers.

And in Division III West Emley Moor were beaten 42-10 at home to Clayton.
