SERBIA player Austen Barrowclough aims to fly the flag for Huddersfield and Oldham when he takes on Wales this weekend.
The 19-year-old rugby league player from Netherton has been offered a new contract by Oldham – and aims to celebrate by helping the Serbs score an against- the-odds victory in Sunday’s European Cup clash in Smederevo.
Playing under mum Elizabeth’s maiden name of Novakovic, the former Honley High School pupil couldn’t prevent Serbia suffering an 82-0 setback against Ireland in Tullamore last weekend.
But according to Elizabeth, the score doesn’t tell the story.
“Serbia were up against a strong side featuring a number of Super league players, and while they did plenty of attacking, they just couldn’t get through. Austen himself was held up over the line three times,” she said.
“They are a developing side who don’t have the kind of back-up the more established countries possess, but there’s a very strong spirit there, and just being involved in a tournament like this is a huge boost.”
Six teams take part in the European Cup, which culminates in a finals day at Bridgend, Wales on Sunday, November 8.
Ex-Newsome Panthers forward Barrowclough joined Oldham midway through last season.
