Honest head coach Richard Knight admits he’s no idea which Underbank Rangers side will turn up to host Blackbrook in Saturday’s National Conference League Second Division clash at The Cross.

While fourth-placed Rangers were outstanding in beating third-placed Featherstone Lions just over a month ago, they were equally as poor in scraping a win at Bradford Dudley Hill and then suffering a demoralising home defeat to Dewsbury Celtic the last time out.

That gut-wrenching home loss to their mid-table derby rivals was three weeks ago, which has given Rangers a lot of time to dwell on such a disappointing day.

It’s also given Knight’s side the chance to work on the reasons why a lack of consistency has become Bank’s major stumbling block.

And the head coach is keeping his fingers crossed they’ve come up with the right answers.

“I honestly haven’t got a clue what to expect this weekend,” said Knight.

“I do know that if we play to our full potential – like we did against Featherstone Lions the other month – and Blackbrook play to their full potential, we’ll beat them.

“But if we turn up and play like we have done in our last two games, then Blackbrook could enjoy their day over here.

“The boys have been training really well, which should give us hope for the game ahead, but the boys trained really well in the build-up to the Dudley Hill and Dewsbury Celtic games, so who knows how it’ll pan out.

“I just hope the side go out there and produce the sort of performance that makes me wonder why I had anything to worry about in the first place. I’d love that to be the case.”

Underbank are boosted by the return of scrum-half James Usher, who missed the Celtic defeat with a calf injury.

That means makeshift No7 Luke Pogson can get back to his favoured position of hooker, where he has been one of Rangers’ most consistent performers this season.

And Knight knows that switch could hold the key to a much-improved display.

“Scrum-half and hooker are vitally important positions, and having our first-choice players back there is obviously a big plus,” he added.

“If they get straight back into the groove and Dave Valentine, Kris Harrop and Alex Chatterton – our three main consistent players this year – are in top form, then I fully expect everything to fall back into place.

“If we’re to keep in that top-four mix, then we have to beat sides like Blackbrook. They’re just one place below us in the table, so the importance of a win simply can’t be underestimated.”
