Underbank Rangers secured their National Conference League Second Division promotion play-off spot with a comfortable 46-10 home triumph over Oldham St Annes.

But the visitors made a real fist of it for the first hour until Rangers stepped up another gear to run in four unanswered tries in the final quarter to give the scoreboard a lopsided look.

The home side took the lead after 10 minutes when centre Alex Chatterton sent wing partner Jonathan Tinker racing over from an audacious flick pass.

The lead was doubled 10 minutes later as Chatterton latched onto a Richard Knight drop-off pass to brush through three attempted tackles to score his 22nd try of the season. Hooker Luke Pogson converted the score. Player-coach Knight was next to cross after being put clear by a superb Kris Harrop break and offload.

Joel Croker added the extras and did so again as back-rower Mitch Turner burst through for a great individual try.

But the visitors were given some late first-half hope when Dominic Bryan raced in and Nathan Conroy converted to make it 22-6 at the break.

And that hope was increased within minutes of the restart as Bryan completed his brace to reduce the lead to two scores.

The concession of the try stung the home side into action and, after 60 minutes, Bengal Spice man-of-the-match Kurt Selmes scored his first try of the season by storming onto a Croker drop-off pass to touch down.

Pogson kicked the conversion and landed another minutes later after Knight grabbed his second following good work from Luke Nelmes, Chatterton and Harrop.

The two quickfire scores took the game away from the resurgent visitors, and allowed Rangers to play some exhibition rugby.

Michael Murphy crossed after he received a superb offload in the tackle from Croker and with four minutes remaining replacement hooker Stephen Berry bagged his first try of the campaign after prop Mikey Holmes had made a telling break and combined with Tinker and Knight to finally hand on to the supporting Berry who crashed over with great delight at avoiding the naked run.

Two more conversions were added, one each for Pogson and Croker, to round off a very satisfactory performance from Rangers who, with other results on the day, travel to Leigh East next Saturday for the final league match knowing a victory will seal fourth place and a home promotion play-off semi-final.
