The Giants will find out almost immediately who they’ll face in next week’s qualifying semi-final – if they beat Catalan Dragons on Friday.
Super League chiefs have announced minor champions St Helens will choose from the winners of the two preliminary semi-finals, Castleford Tigers v Warrington Wolves and Huddersfield v Catalan, when they make the ClubCall pick live on Sky Sports. In the past, the ClubCall has been held on the Sunday.
The 2014 League Leaders Shield winners earned a bye in week two of the play-offs and the right to select their opponents after their thumping 41-0 victory over Castleford on Friday night.
The win came just 24 hours after defending champions Wigan Warriors had also secured a bye by hammering Huddersfield Giants 57-4.
Saints can’t pick arch-rivals Wigan under the ClubCall rules, meaning chairman Eamonn McManus will have the option of bringing either the Giants, Catalan, Castleford or Warrington to Langtree Park the following week, when the winners will book their place at Old Trafford for the Grand Final on Saturday, October 11.
It means there’s a chance, therefore, the Giants could be heading back to Wigan in just under a fortnight!
The two preliminary semi-finals are as follows:
Thursday (September 25): Castleford Tigers v Warrington Wolves (8.00pm).
Friday (September 26): Huddersfield Giants v Catalans Dragons (8.00pm).
