SUPER Huddersfield Giants turned on the style to destroy Wigan and prove yet again that they can mix it with the competition's `big boys'!

Apart from the final 10 minutes when the Warriors raced in for three tries, coach Jon Sharp's side were in a totally different class.

After leading 24-0, a 24-16 final scoreline simply didn't reflect the manner in which the Giants dominated the contest.

In every department, the home side were superior.

And had it not been for some highly resolute Wigan defence, particularly in the first half, Huddersfield would have been able to celebrate victory by a substantial margin.

Apart from the hat trick from man-of-the-match Paul Reilly and a 90m `special' from Brad Drew, there were a number of close calls for the home side.

Stanley Gene had a try ruled out when referee Ashley Klein judged Chris Nero had played the ball incorrectly, while Gene, Paul March, Paul Jackson, Marcus St Hilaire and Ben Roarty all came agonisingly close to crossing the whitewash.

To be fair, Wigan did have the odd moment, with Hefin O'Hare forced to produce an excellent tackle to deny Brett Dallas a try in the corner in the 26th minute.

But, that apart, this match was all about the impressive Giants and the way they totally overwhelmed Wigan for so long.

It soon became clear the home side were by far the better side and it was certainly no surprise when they took the lead after 14 minutes.

And how fitting it should be that Huddersfield-born Reilly should make the first major contribution!

The former Moldgreen junior is rightly regarded as one of the best full-backs in the business - a point now reinforced after upstaging Wigan and Great Britain No1 Kris Radlinski last night.

Quite simply, Reilly played Radlinski off the park, with the visitors' full-back powerless to prevent his opposite number scoring the opening try.

The in-form Gene made it all possible, making the initial ground before feeding Reilly, who stepped round his marker and then had the strength to crash through the despairing tackle of Radlinski to score under the posts.

Michael De Vere added the first of his four successful conversions and the Giants had gained the early reward for their dominance.

They continued to dominate as the half progressed, but it wasn't until two minutes before the break that the lead was extended.

Once again it was the same combination that was on hand to unlock the Wigan defence, with Gene's superb reverse kick on the last tackle enabling Reilly to follow through and touch down.

That made it 12-0 at half-time, with the hope that there might be a lot more to come.

Even Jerry Seuseu's high shot on Reilly a minute after the restart which resulted in the big prop being placed on-report, failed to knock the Giants out of their stride.

And in the 50th minute the lead was extended in the most spectacular style.

With Wigan pressing on the Huddersfield line, Danny Orr grubber-kicked on the last tackle.

But the alert Drew was on hand to gather, spotted a gap in the defensive line and darted through at speed before outpacing the cover in an amazing run to the line.

What a way to score your first try for your new club!

St Hilaire, Roarty and Gene then came within a whisker of extending the advantage before Reilly completed his hat trick following an amazing run to the line.

As the Giants took their foot off the gas, Wigan grabbed three late tries through Jerom Guisset (twice) and Harrison Hansen and two Chris Melling conversions.

That did take some of the gloss off the triumph.

But it was still a great night to be a Giants' fan!
