The destructive Huddersfield Giants put the most disappointing week of their season behind them to take out all their frustration on the defenceless Widnes Vikings.

After losing top spot in the Super League XVIII table with the loss at Warrington and then the shock defeat at struggling Salford, Huddersfield hit back in the most spectacular fashion with a 62-6 11-try home Easter Monday triumph.

The injury-hit Vikings may have been a pale shadow of the side that won 38-22 at home to Warrington Wolves on Good Friday.

But so much of that had to do with the ruthless nature of the way the Giants went about their business.

As opposed to the City Reds horror show of just a couple of days earlier, coach Paul Anderson’s men showed the right attitude, attacking with purpose and defending with menace.

As a result, the outcome was never in doubt, with in-form winger Aaron Murphy leading the way with his first Giants’ hat trick and Danny Brough finishing with a personal haul of 22 points from a try and nine goals.

And it was obvious the men in claret and gold meant business from the word go, as they wasted little time in ripping into their visitors.

Within two minutes the Giants had made their intentions clear by taking a lead they never looked like losing.

Larne Patrick’s break down the centre of the field cut the Vikings wide open to take his side to the Widnes line, and from the subsequent play, Brough’s kick to the corner gave Murphy a walk-in.

Brough added an excellent touchline conversion, and the ghost of Salford was already being exorcised.

Although the visitors did then force Huddersfield to drop-out from under their own posts, it wasn’t long before the Giants were in cruise control.

The second try came after 15 minutes when Luke Robinson’s long pass released Leroy Cudjoe, who found Jermaine McGillvary, and the winger then slipped the ball back inside to Scott Grix to finish off for Brough to land his second.

And straight from the re-start, the ball was shifted to the left for Brett Ferres to release Joe Wardle to make ground and feed the supporting Brough to cross for an unconverted score – but at 16-0 it was looking good.

It was even better by the break as two more tries were added to make it 26-0.

Michael Lawrence marked his first game of the season following an ankle injury by strolling over from a smart Shaun Lunt pass close to the line after Craig Kopczak had been held up over the try line.

Then Murphy grabbed his second of the game in the 28th minute by collecting Brough’s pass after a lucky bounce on the halfway line had favoured the Giants’ half-back and allowed him to race away.

Although they failed to add to their tally in the remaining 12 minutes of the half, the hosts were over again within 90 seconds of the restart.

A loose Widnes ball was collected by Cudjoe, who immediately fed Luke George to show his pace and race 80m for Brough to again goal.

Huddersfield’s seventh came from close range when Brough’s long pass found the rampaging Jamie Cording to step through and score under the posts.

That was followed by a great team try, with the ball being passed through at let 10 pairs of hands for McGillvary to dive in at the corner for Brough to land another excellent touchline goal.

And with 25 minutes remaining, the half-century was reached when Brough picked up a low ball and passed back inside for the on-rushing Grix to charge over for another converted score.

Credit to Widnes, they refused to wave the white flag and were rewarded with their only try with 16 minutes remaining when Dave Allen’s break gave Joe Mellor an easy score, converted by Tom Gilmore.

But all that did was upset their hosts, who responded with two more scores.

Within four minutes Murphy completed his after collecting Brough’s grubber-kick to the corner and three minutes later Lunt plunged over from acting-half close to the line in typical Lunt fashion.

Brough added both goals to finish with an individual points tally of 22 to complete an emphatic demolition job and put them in buoyant mood ahead of Saturday’s trip to Castleford.
