HUDDERSFIELD celebrated the news head coach Nathan Brown will be staying until the end of next season by returning to winning ways against Crusaders.

After last week’s mauling at Castleford Tigers, the Giants were desperate to make amends against the men from Wrexham.

And although the performance may not have been the greatest in the world, with patches of brilliance punctuated by moments of mistake madness, this 11th success of the season was very well received.

With six games of the regular Super League season remaining, the sixth-placed Giants are now six points clear of Bradford Bulls, who are one place away from a top-eight play-off spot.

Surely, that should be enough to guarantee their involvement in the end-of-season scrap for a place in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford?

And with Brown confirming he will remain at the Galpharm helm until the end of 2011, Huddersfield know they face a period of some stability.

The respect the Giants have for their head coach is already well known, and there was no question his players looked fired-up early on against the Crusaders, having clearly been boosted by the news the Australian is staying.

But their initial cause wasn’t helped by a combination of dogged Crusaders play and the refereeing of James Child.

The Dewsbury official twice penalised the hosts for playing the ball incorrectly and also came down hard on the offsides.

They were unlucky not to take the lead after 15 minutes when David Hodgson almost collected Kevin Brown’s kick for a score.

But there was no mistake five minutes later when good approach play paved the way for Shaun Lunt to step superbly through heavy traffic close to the line to touch down.

Brett Hodgson added the goal and the Giants looked to be on the way.

More pressure nearly brought more reward, but seven minutes later the Welsh side levelled the scores when Luke Robinson’s pass close to the Crusaders’ line was pocketed by Jarrod Sammut who raced away to score, despite the best efforts of the chasing-back Leroy Cudjoe.

Clinton Schifcofske converted and the visitors were right back in it.

Fortunately, however, the Giants were able to find the perfect response.

Just five minutes later, Robinson was making up for his error by feeding a short pass for Stephen Wild to plunge over from close range to restore the six-point advantage.

And two minutes later, Robinson was again at his best, racing clear from inside his own 20 and then kicking ahead for Jermaine McGillvary to score on his home debut to make it 16-6 at the break.

Within four minutes of the restart the lead was up to 14 points when Michael Lawrence collected 40m out and showed great pace and dummy skills to charge over in the corner.

With Brett Hodgson injured in the build-up, Danny Brough just failed to land the goal, but that score ensured the Giants remained on the front foot.

But despite forcing the Crusaders to drop-out twice in quick succession, it was the Wrexham-based side who were the next to strike after 59 minutes.

Acting full-back Cudjoe was unable to collected a towering bomb and from the subsequent set Rhys Hanbury fed Weller Hauraki to storm over from close range for a second converted score.

Hauraki almost added to his tally moments later, but spilled the ball on the line.

It was a clear warning that the contest was far from over, and to relax at that stage could be asking for trouble.

But in the final seven minutes the Giants struck twice more to seal the contest.

The outstanding Lunt set the ball rolling, producing a crunching tackle on Hanbury on halfway.

The alert Brown immediately scooped up the loose ball and raced away for a try, converted by Brough.

Then in the final seconds, Hanbury’s pass was intercepted by McGillvary, who raced 80m to round off a much-needed victory.
