It was the perfect way to signal their arrival at their new home.

Less than two years after leaving their spiritual Fartown ground, Huddersfield RLFC marked their first game at the state-of-the-art Kirklees Stadium with a stunning 50-12 Second Division victory over Barrow.

The date was Sunday, August 28, 1994 - exactly 21 years ago - and it was the start of a glorious upturn in the fortunes of the claret and gold club, culminating in the collection of the Super League Leaders Shield in 2013.

Huddersfield skipper Neil Flanagan had the honour of scoring his side’s first ever try at the Alfred McAlpine Stadium, as it was known at the time, in front of a 4,300 crowd.

To mark the occasion, there was a parade of former Fartown stars before the game, and that provided the inspiration for a top-quality performance from coach George Fairbairn’s men.

Led by man-of-the-match Australian prop Dave King, Huddersfield dominated the contest from start to finish.

They led 20-6 at half-time, thanks to tries from scrum half Flanagan, winger Brimah Kebbie, centre Greg Austin and hooker Lee St Hilaire, with loose-forward Greg Pearce adding two conversions.

And the hosts continued to dominate after the break with further scores from winger Ian Thomas (two), Austin, second-row forward Joe Naidole and centre Darrall Shelford, with Pearce bringing up the half-century with a superb last-minute touchline conversion.
