GIANTS officials are keeping their fingers crossed that the snow disappears and their opening Senior Academy grading fixture can take place tomorrow.

A pitch inspection is due for later today to decide if the game against Wigan Warriors at Huddersfield YMCA's Laund Hill ground (2.30) can go ahead.

Coach Lee St Hilaire's squad have had to wait a long time for this fixture to come along, and he admits the players will be bitterly disappointed if the wait continues.

"The boys have trained hard and are ready to play," he reported.

"Our warm-up games have been kept to a minimum and they've been counting the days down to this match for quite some time.

"It'll be a blow if we can't play."

Included in the side to face Wigan are a strong second-row pairing of Matthew Whittaker and Paul Smith, who are bound to feature in Super League at some stage this season.

In contrast, St Hilaire has named a highly exciting but inexperienced half-back pairing in Thomas Hemingway and Paul Mennell.

But even though the duo still have two years left at Junior Academy level, the club have great faith that they can shine in the Senior Academy.

A key absentee is Super League squad man Iain Morrison, who has suffered a knee injury in training.

He was due to play against the Warriors and then be 18th man for Sunday's clash against Pia.

If the game does go ahead, the YMCA bar will be open before and after the match and there will be hot food and drinks available.

Admission is £2 for adults and £1 for concessions and season-ticket holders. All Under 16s are free.
