HUDDERSFIELD Giants suffered a rude awakening to life in the Senior Academy Championship as they were beaten 54-6 by Leeds Rhinos in their Headingley opener.

Inspired by senior squad men Nathan McAvoy and Chris Feather, the home side were soon in control, and by half-time had built up a 34-6 lead.

Huddersfield did give it their best, with Gareth Hull crossing for a try, converted by Danny Garside.

But without key half-backs Thomas Hemingway and Paul Mennell, who were still struggling with knocks picked up in the Super League pre-season clash at Wigan, it was always going to be a tall order.

First-team squad men Jonathan Grayshon, Bolu Fagborun and Mat Gardner all tried their best to inspire their side.

Unfortunately, that was never going to be enough against a strong Leeds second string, coached by former Giants centre Graeme Hallas.

Rhinos' tries came from McAvoy, Feather, Peter Fox (2), Luke Gale (2), Jamie I'Anson, Jordan Tansey, Ian Kirke and Ashley Gibson, who also landed seven goals.
