HUDDERSFIELD Giants experienced mixed fortunes in their latest Academy clashes.
While the Seniors were securing a hard-fought 30-26 triumph over Dewsbury Rams at Laund Hill, the Juniors were suffering a 26-16 defeat to Leeds Rhinos at Headingley.
The Giants' Senior Academy success made it two wins, one draw and one defeat from their opening four First Division fixtures, with a trip to face Leeds Rhinos on Thursday night.
Huddersfield were always ahead against the Rams, and had goalkicker Patrick Walker been given some easier conversion attempts, the margin of the home side's victory would have been much greater.
The Giants crossed for seven tries, but with almost every conversion attempt being from the touchline, Walker had to settle for just one success - an event which brought arguably the biggest cheer of the day!
Symon Sutherland led the tryscoring with two, while there were one each for Stephen Jones - back from his loan spell at National League I Featherstone Rovers - Glenn Holdsworth, Walker, Paul Mennell and Super League squad man Iain Morrison.
That Morrison try was well deserved, with the Scotland international back-rower proving a dominant force, along with fellow pack man Scott Housten.
Unfortunately, the Junior Academy were unable to repeat their heroic 33-32 grading fixture triumph over Leeds as they were beaten 26-16 in a Headingley curtain-raiser to the Rhinos' Challenge Cup clash against Pia.
The situation was looking promising at half-time, with the visitors leading 10-4.
And it was only in the final 10 minutes that their hosts sealed victory with two decisive scores.
It was a disappointing end to a good Giants performance in which Luke George scored two outstanding tries and Thomas Hemingway also crossed and landed two goals.
A major problem for both sides was the fact that they only discovered two days before the contest that this game would have to be played.
But they were still able to produce a top-quality contest, which will hopefully bode well for Saturday when coach Chris Plume's men entertain a strong Hull FC side at Laund Hill.
