Patient prop Antonio Kaufusi is prepared to play the waiting game in his bid to secure a regular Giants Super League spot.

The former London Broncos front-row forward has made a frustrating start to his time at Huddersfield.

After featuring in his side’s opening 10 top-flight fixtures, the 29-year-old has been unable to establish himself in coach Paul Anderson’s side and spent May on loan at Bradford Bulls.

His decision to return to the John Smith’s Stadium after the month away and fight to win back a first-team spot has yet to reap a reward, with the one-Test cap Australia front-row forward still waiting to earn a place back in the Giants’ 19-man squad.

Kaufusi will be hoping that changes this week and he features in Saturday’s home clash against Salford Red Devils.

But if he doesn’t, he’s pledged to keep doing what he can to win back his place.

“Paul has told me I need to bide my time to get back in the first team. so that’s what I’m doing,” said Kaufusi.

“I’m just going to keep training hard and wait for my opportunity and then make the most of that chance when it comes along.

“And hopefully my time away will ultimately help.

“By going on loan I was showing Paul I was keen to do whatever it took to get plenty of gametime for the Giants, because I was being restricted to 20 to 25 minutes per game at the start of the year.

“I got plenty of minutes under my belt at Bradford and I benefited from that.

“But I signed from London to play for Huddersfield and if I wasn’t training with that club I wasn’t going to be in their calculations for games, so that’s why I’ve come back.”

Kaufusi’s chances of making the 19 to face Salford have been improved because of the injury to back-row forward Brett Ferres, who has been sidelined for two weeks with a quad injury suffered during last Thursday’s 26-22 triumph at Hull KR.

Back-row forward Jason Chan and prop Anthony Mullally were 18th and 19th men respectively against the Robins, with Kaufusi expected to join the duo in the battle to take the place of Ferres in this week’s final 17.
