PROMISING prop Chris Lawson was today celebrating a first Super League contract as the Giants come to terms with the loss of winger Martin Aspinwall for the rest of the season.

It has now been confirmed the Great Britain winger needs a full knee reconstruction after suffering medial ligament damage during Sunday’s home defeat to Warrington.

“The extent of the injury is a massive blow and means that’s it for the season,’’ said Sharp. “I feel really sorry for Martin. After a slow start to the year because of a groin injury, he was showing some of his best form and the form that got him on a Great Britain tour.

“To lose someone as important as him is a blow, but it does give someone else a chance in the team.”

But while the news was bad for Aspinwall, it was good for 19-year-old Lawson, who has earned a full-time contract for 2008 on the back of some outstanding Academy displays.

“Chris is as tough as they come and this contract is a reward for all his hard work,” revealed Sharp.

“His commitment to the cause and the team is unquestionable, and if he continues to put in the work then anything is possible.”
