A TRY from Ben Benn early in the second half put Giants on their way to a 38-18 win over Crusaders at YMCA’s Laund Hill ground.
Newcomers Crusaders made a promising start to the Phase Two game in the Valvoline Academy competition as they stunned Giants with a penalty from centre Alex Webber and he then added the goal after hooker Kyle Blackmore had crossed for a try after 13 minutes.
But the Giants began to find their rhythm and raced in to the lead with tries from prop Danny Keane, centre Aaron Briggs and loose forward Scott Farnsworth with stand off Danny Ansell adding two goals.
Before half-time Crusaders replied with a try from winger Dan Godwin, but Webber failed to add the conversion giving the home side a four point advantage at the interval.
Just six minutes into the second period Benn grabbed the touchdown that turned the tide for the Giants.
Adam Jefferson’s touchdown increased the lead before Benn added his second try and, after centre Jack Pring has crossed for Crusaders two minutes from time, Keane completed the Giants’ try tally on the final whistle with Ansell kicking his fifth goal from seven attempts.
The Giants next Valvoline Academy outing is away to Hull FC on Saturday, the match to be played at Hull Ionians RUFC (12.30).
