TOP Giants prop Keith Mason believes his best years are still ahead.

The 27-year-old front-row forward has become the cornerstone of Huddersfield’s Super League pack.

That fact was recognised by Giants chief Nathan Brown who named him the Coaches’ Player of the Year.

But Mason knows there’s much more to come and he has thrown down the gauntlet in pre-season training by taking the early sessions by storm.

“Last season is probably the best I’ve had,” said the former St Helens man.

“I thought I was consistent all year and played a part in what was a great season for us.

“In fact, quite a few people were tipping me for England honours on the back of it, which was flattering.

“As a result, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I didn’t even make the initial Four Nations squad.

“It did make me wonder what I’d done wrong.

“But that’s just made me even more determined to keep improving and keep working hard with the Giants, which is something I’m doing now.

“I now feel I’m coming into my prime as a prop forward – they say you reach your peak at about 28 – and I know I can get better. I’m looking forward to next year.”

And Mason is also delighted his former Saints teammate Lee Gilmour is now a Giant.

“Gilly’s a great player and a good bloke,” he added.

“I’m sure he’ll prove a very valuable addition to the squad.”
