Proud Brett Ferres is hoping the honour of leading out a Super League side for the first time will help him inspire the Huddersfield Giants to a morale-boosting triumph at former club Castleford tomorrow night.

The England back-row forward will step up to captain Huddersfield in the absence of the injured Danny Brough, who suffered jaw and ankle damage during Saturday’s demoralising 36-10 home defeat to Salford Red Devils.

Ferres knows he faces a tough captaincy debut, with the injury-hit Giants going into battle with a makeshift side, with Brough, Scott Grix (groin), David Faiumu (shoulder and groin), Shaun Lunt (calf), Aaron Murphy (broken hand) and Jacob Fairbank (ankle) all unavailable.

But the 28-year-old is still relishing his new role and is pledging to do everything within his power to set the same example as current Super League Man of Steel Brough.

“Friday is going to be a very special day, because this is my first time as captain and it’ll be against my former club,” said Ferres.

“Every time I go out there I try and do my best for the boys.

“But because Broughy won’t be out there I know I’m going to need to step up a bit more and lead from the front, and I’m looking forward to doing that.

“To be honest, I’m always quite vocal during games, and I think the triangle of Broughy as captain and Robbo (Luke Robinson) and me as vice captain works well, so the change tomorrow won’t be that dramatic.

“It’s just there will be a little bit more responsibility on my shoulders.”

And Ferres doesn’t think he’ll need to motivate his teammates too much to try and produce a decent performance at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

“After that Salford display, we all feel we have a point to prove,” he added.

“It’s fair to say we were all gutted by the way things went, and we certainly heard a few home truths from Baloo.

“We’re now reaching the business end of the season and know it’s time to step things up. That has to start at Castleford.”
