GIANTS coach Jon Sharp will give his players until the end of the week to earn a place in the side to face Bradford Bulls in Sunday's big pre-season clash at Odsal (3.00).
Sharp intends naming a squad of up to 19 players in his club's only first-team warm-up before the Super League X opener at Leigh Centurions on Saturday, February 12.
That means the pressure will be on at Odsal to be included in the Leigh League clash.
But first players must prove to Sharp that they deserve to play against the Bulls this weekend.
Apart from Australian Test centre Michael De Vere, who is still a month away from making a return following major knee surgery, all 23 players in Sharp's senior squad are available for selection.
And Sharp knows he already has some tough decisions to make.
"I'm not too keen on sending a massive squad to Bradford, because that would mean having to chop and change every five minutes," explained Sharp.
"This is our only first-team hit-out before the start of the season, so it's important all my players have a fair amount of game time.
"That can only be achieved if I pick around 18 or 19 players, and that's what I intend to do.
"The players are fully aware of that fact and know they have until the end of the week to convince me they deserve to be playing at Odsal.
"Those in action that day are obviously in pole position to play at Leigh in our opening Super League match.
"So it's obvious this week is a very big week for the squad.
"The boys are itching to get cracking and after our week in Portugal the mood in camp is very buoyant."
