Huddersfield Giants skipper Danny Brough says Huddersfield will need to be smarter in their Challenge Cup showdown with Leeds Rhinos on Saturday.

The sixth round televised clash at Headingley (2.30) pits the Giants against the Super League leaders a little over two weeks after the teams drew 24-24 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“We were a bit disappointed the other week when we played Leeds because we gifted them a couple of soft tries,” admitted Brough.

“We will have to be that bit smarter than we were last time we played Leeds and we will be up for it – it is a massive game for both clubs.

“Obviously when you play Leeds in the Challenge Cup it is never going to be easy, but we will go in there whole-hearted and ready to give our all.”

Brough has already tasted success in the competition with Hull FC in 2005 when the Airlie Birds beat Leeds 25-24 in the final at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

“It is now 10 years ago since I got my hands on the Cup, so it has been a while,” said Brough.

“But some people can play for 20 years and never get their hands on it, so I have got to think myself fortunate that I have lifted it once – but it would be nice to do it again.

“Everyone around rugby league knows what a special occasion it is to play in the Challenge Cup final and we will go there and try and get the result we want.”

Last season the Giants exited at the first hurdle as they were beaten 17-16 at home by St Helens, when referee Phil Bentham controversially ruled out a Brough drop goal.

While Brough is not too concerned about that decision now, he feels the Giants will use last season’s rapid exit as an incentive for this term’s competition.

“Had that drop goal been in a semi-final or the final I think it would have hurt a lot more,” said Brough.

“Obviously I was disappointed on the day, but hopefully this year we can get a run going.”
