Impressive Daniel Smith is confident he can build on his matchwinning Giants Super League debut as quickly as possible.

Although the 22-year-old prop only arrived at Huddersfield from top-flight rivals Wakefield at the start of last week – Anthony Mullally made the move in the opposite direction – he slotted comfortably into his new side and played a key role in the vitally-important 14-12 triumph at Catalans Dragons.

It was a victory which guarantees the Giants a top-four finish with a home win over Wakefield on Sunday.

And former Leeds Academy man Smith feels ready to build on his exploits in the South of France.

“The debut couldn’t have gone any better,” admitted Smith, who has signed a four-and-a-half year contract with the Giants.

To get any win over in Catalans is impressive, and to do it in my first game for Huddersfield makes it even more special, especially when you consider the significance of it. It’s another massive step in making sure we finish in the top four.

“And I was also pretty pleased with my own performance. Even though I wasn’t familiar with the calls and the way the Giants play, I still felt comfortable out there and was able to slot straight in by playing a good number of minutes.

“In that respect, I think it dropped right for me to be out with the squad in France straight away. It couldn’t have been a better way for me to get to know my new teammates.

“It means I’ve already settled in here really well and feel as if I’m a Huddersfield Giants player, which is really important ahead of playing Wakefield this weekend.

“There’s bound to be a fair bit of banter flying around this week between me and the Wakefield boys, and that’s going to make this another big game for me.

“After the way things went at Catalans, I certainly feel confident and ready to build on my debut.”
