Huddersfield Giants chairman Ken Davy believes Danny Brough should be the England captain – because he’s the best skipper in Super League.

Huddersfield’s goalkicking half-back has again nailed his colours firmly to the Scotland mast as he continues to be frozen out of the England set-up by national coach Steve McNamara.

Brough has again been in excellent form for the Giants as they head into the last game of the regular season knowing a victory at home to Leeds Rhinos on Friday night could earn them the Super League Leaders Shield for the second time in three years.

And Davy admits he still finds it hard to understand why his No6 isn’t featuring for his country of birth.

“We’re playing some scintillating attacking rugby league at the moment. It’s a joy to be able to watch it,” said the Giants owner.

“At the heart of the way we’re playing is Danny Brough, who is once again leading us by example.

“We’re lucky at the Giants to be able to watch him playing on a weekly basis, and that’s why we all believe he should be the captain of England. We all think he’s the best captain in Super League.

“He’s an inspiration, both on attack and defence, and we’ve lost count of the number of times he comes up with the magic play when they really matter.

“We’re expecting Friday’s game against Leeds to be incredibly close – they usually are – and it could well come down to another piece of Broughy magic to get us over the line.

“Having said that, our success at the moment is largely down to the way we’re playing as a team and the way everyone is prepared to work hard for each other. That’s proving vitally important.”

And Davy is hoping the fans turn out in force and be part of what could be a very special night at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“Because the stakes have never been higher we’re really hoping to attract a very good crowd,” he added.

“Both Leeds and ourselves go into this game knowing we could finish the night with the League Leaders Shield and having secured a home semi-final play-off spot. Games don’t get more important than that.

“The supporters have a massive role to play in getting behind us and making sure we get the job done.

“We want to be celebrating a glorious night in front of our biggest home crowd of the season.”
