FOR the past six or seven weeks we have heard Jon Sharp’s excuses as to why the Giants have lost.
It is just like listening to a CD every week. But is it entirely his fault that they keep losing?
Year after year we hear from the backroom staff ‘this year we have the strongest and fittest squad ever.’
And look at the list of coaches we have had – in no particular order – Maurice Bamford, Alex Murphy, Mal Reilly, Garry Schofield, George Fairburn, Tony Smith, John Kear, Steve Ferres, Steve McNamara, all good players in their day and most top coaches.
But out of that selection I think we played the best rugby under Smith. Being an Aussie might have something to do with it, so should we be looking ‘down under’!
A letter to Jon Sharp
HAVING just come back from the KC Stadium and read your post match comments, there is a saying which goes “you can fool some of the people some of the time but NOT all of the people all of the time”.
I am fed up of you saying that we are a skilful side and not far off being a top side.
As you quite rightly state, the first hour was rubbish, so why did you not change it?
The positives to take out of the game.
Aspwinall looked good, as did Robinson. Hemingway, but he did not stay around long enough.
Yet again, we have not solved our problem position, I suggest you look at the Tickle try.
Why do we look boring when on Sky? I hope you managed to watch the two games on Sky this weekend, that was entertaining rugby played with passion and commitment, quick around the play-the-ball, backing one another up, and putting the opposition under pressure when kicking.
Our rugby looks stifled, stuttery and sluggish, as though the players are playing to a game plan which does not suit them.
Our kicking game is pathetic, so we play the “stick it up the jumper” rugby because it is a safer option, then, when we have nothing to lose, we open up and look good.
The game on Sunday reflected the position in the table of both the teams, a mediocre game which was there for the winning.
But, unfortunately we never looked like winning, confidence in the team must be low, and you are NOT the person to lift them.
Claret and Gold
For how much longer?
HOW long have the loyal supporters of the Giants had to put up with poor performances of the team.
Another statement from our coach “things will get better”, following on from “we’re nearly there”.
Hasn’t someone told him we’re nearly halfway through the season.
Also he states “the stats show we were the best team against the Wildcats Reserves”, when all the fans know we weren’t.
Even the score against Halifax flattered us.
Jon Sharp’s uninspiring coaching, failure to motivate players must mean his days are numbered. His “one man rugby” style is from a bygone era.
There were more offloads in Saints v Wolves than we do in a season.
He has assembled the best squad we’ve had in Super League, so I hope Mr Davy can bring in someone who can truly inspire and coach the team to the next level, because the current coach can’t. If the situation doesn't alter the crowds will suffer.
We have booked for Cardiff and Catalans away, I can only see two more defeats unless action is taken sooner than later.
