GIANTS star Stanley Gene has thanked the fans for the role they have played in helping him be crowned the club's player of the year.

The popular Papua New Guinean last night picked up his award at the Giants' end of season presentation night at the McAlpine Stadium.

He scooped the award despite missing the last three games with a fractured cheekbone.

But collecting the prize has helped ease some of that pain.

"This has been the best year for the Giants in Super League, and I'm proud to have been able to play a part in it," said the 29-year-old.

"But I do honestly believe I couldn't have done so well without the backing of the fans.

"They have been right behind me from day one, and I can't thank them enough for that."
