Huddersfield Giants assistant coach Kieron Purtill is confident the club’s fan base will continue to grow – should on-the-field success be maintained.

Paul Anderson’s right-hand man, who is also coach of England Knights, believes the Giants are in a great position to challenge for more silverware in 2014.

He understands that playing success and support size go hand in hand, and that it’s down to the Huddersfield squad to draw in the crowds.

“Obviously we want our fan base to continue to grow, but we know that will happen if we continue to be successful on the field,” said Purtill.

“We want everything to grow on and off the field, be that the quality of performance, the quality of the players we bring in, the quality of the young kids that we’re bringing through or the structures we’re putting in place to help our players become internationals.

“Last year we had a really good year and put some good foundations down, but we are not happy with that and we want to improve. We fully expect to be in the top two, win trophies and compete.”

Purtill believes the close-season acquisitions of Chris Bailey, Antonio Kaufusi and Jodie Broughton will help the club reach the next level.

“Last year we had a good squad and we were happy with it, but we are always looking to improve and the guys we have brought in will add something different,” he said.

“Jodie has one quality which you cannot produce – speed, and Chris Bailey brings something which we didn't have last year – a ball-playing back rower.

“After losing Stuart Fielden early on last year we missed that hard-nosed front rower with a streak of aggression, and Antonio has already put down some markers in training. He will probably take over that mantle of bringing the front rowers on and will take some pressure off the other props.”
