The 27-year-old New Zealand Test star has achieved more than most during his glittering career.

As well as earning 16 caps and helping the Kiwis beat Australia in the Tri-Nations final three seasons ago, Whatuira has savoured Australian NRL Grand Final glory with Wests Tigers.

But playing at Cardiff’s magnificent venue, where the Giants were taking on Warrington as part of the rugby league’s Millennium Magic extravaganza, is a new experience for him.

“I’ve heard a lot about the stadium,” said Whatuira.

“The boys who played there last season said it was fantastic, and they’ve been really excited about going back.

“Being able to compete at places like that is one of the reasons why I wanted to come to play in Super League here.

“It’s something a lot of the players back in Australia will never experience, so I feel pretty lucky.

“I just hope I can mark my first appearance there with a win.

“Even though the results aren’t going our way, we’re still very positive and know we have what it takes to turn things around.

“It would be fantastic if that can get under way at the Millennium Stadium.”

As well as playing at Wales’ premier venue, Whatuira would also love to play at Wembley.

For that to be achieved, Huddersfield would have to reach the Challenge Cup final.

The Giants head for Hull KR in the fifth round a week tomorrow.

I’m well aware of the history of the competition,” said Whatuira.

“I enjoyed playing at Halifax the other week.

“Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to find out what it’s like to play in a final. That would be awesome!

“We certainly have the quality of players to take us all the way, so I hope we do it sooner rather than later.”
