BUOYANT Huddersfield Giants are targeting 7,000 of the town's sports fans in a bid to secure club record season-ticket sales.

Giants chairman Ken Davy is writing to supporters to encourage them to take advantage of the Super League ticket offers for 2005, which have been well received by the Giants faithful.

Davy has admitted his club needs to build significantly on last season's average crowd of 4,500 if they are to continue to progress up the Super League ladder.

Initial season-ticket sales have been steady - they went on sale on Thursday and remain at a discounted rate until the end of the month - but club officials are hopeful of breaking the £100,000 barrier well before Christmas.

"The fans had asked for a price freeze, for a return to 3pm kick-offs and special offers for juniors, and that's what we've given them," said general manager Richard Thewlis.

"I'm delighted to say the response has been positive.

"Early demand for season tickets has been very encouraging, thanks to our initial media hit.

"The next step is for Ken Davy to write to over 7,000 Giants supporters and sports fans in general. It is another excellent way of getting our message across."

RFL officials, meanwhile, have told Leigh and Whitehaven, who meet at Widnes' Halton Stadium in Sunday's National League I Grand Final, that they meet the criteria for elevation to the top flight, subject to them completing additional ground improvements.

The news confirms Castleford's relegation for the first time in the club's 78-year history.
